Thanks for posting this link. I'm so far behind on my reading that I might never have seen this article. I must also confess that his story made me shake my head in disbelief -- I know it's true, but I forget -- perhaps because we live so much of our lives in the dog show world.
I have appreciated the naming of "It Gets Better". High school (or maybe just adolescence) is torture for any kid who is "different" regardless of ethnicity and/or orientation.
It does get better.
(From the long-ago girl with four eyes and braces and a slide rule who also loved trig.)
I suspect that essentially every high school kid feels alone and "different" (says the Michigan girl, who was uprooted just in time to go to high school in Kansas, whose epithet was "commie".....).
I suspect that bullies are doing it to assuage their own feelings of alone-ness......
Which is no excuse.
I can't imagine how hard it is for kids who are tortured by others. Shame on the bullies, and shame on the rest of us, for walking by, for not speaking up, for allowing innocents to be targeted...........
I think the "It gets better" movement is just wonderful. I surely hope it is helping kids make it through the bad times.
Thank you, Paul, for sharing your story. It's good for all of us to hear it. I'm so glad you stuck it out and found adulthood to be so much better!
Wow - what a great article. While he has told me this story in person, there is something powerful and moving to see it in print for the world to "see". Kudos to Paul for being the strong man he is. I'm proud to call him a friend. :)
Toreth means "abundance" in Welsh. While being involved with Cardigans may not pay my bills they certainly provide plenty of joy in my life. Who couldn't use more of that!
